The film follows Ed Crane, a barber with a talkative and charismatic partner. Ed is an ordinary man with a quiet and introverted yet intriguing personality. One afternoon, just before closing the shop, a middle-aged man enters and insists on getting a haircut. Ed reluctantly agrees to work on the man's nearly hairless head, only to find out that the man, Creighton Tolliver, has ulterior motives for coming to the shop.
Creighton, who is in need of a business partner with capital, proposes a deal to Ed. Ed accepts the offer, and all that's left is to come up with the money. Little does Ed know that he has orchestrated everything, including exposing his wife Doris' affair with Creighton, who happens to be a friend of Ed's. In exchange for the partnership, Ed receives a small paper note. Though he initially feels deceived, he soon finds he doesn't really care about the money.
However, when Doris' lover, now aware of Ed's knowledge, starts threatening him for money, Ed begins to investigate and finds himself trapped in a web of deceit and blackmail.
