The Last Days on Mars(tt1709143), a standout science fiction film at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival's Directors' Fortnight section. On the last day of the first manned mission to Mars, a member of the Tantalus Base believes he has made an incredible discovery - fossilized evidence of bacterial life. When he doesn't want the rest of the team to benefit from this discovery, he defies orders and embarks on an unauthorized expedition to collect more samples. However, a routine excavation turns into a disaster when the porous soil collapses, leaving him on the brink of death after falling into a deep crevice. His devastated colleagues try to heal his body, but they begin to suspect that the discovered life form may not be dead yet. As the group starts to fall apart, their only hope is that the arrival of their ship, Aurora, is imminent. Directed by British filmmaker Ruairi Robinson, The Last Days on Mars is a science fiction film based on a short story by Sydney J. Bounds and adapted into a screenplay by Clive Dawson.
