Konusu ve Detaylı Bilgi
One-Eyed Jacks(tt0055257) Marlon Brando, of course, can play any role. Love and Revenge was the biggest question that arose from Brando's first attempt at directing: can he direct a film?
Brando, who popularized the Stanislavsky Method in American cinema in the early 50s, summarizes his unique style in the opening scene of the film. Slowly savoring a banana, the camera pulls back to emphasize how calm his character Rio is in a situation that turns out to be a bank robbery. He smiles and the camera movement stops with a wide shot, just before he takes a woman customer's ring, swallowing the last bite of his fruit.
This magnificent scene sets the pace in contrast to Rio's partner, the tough and brawling Dad Longworth (Karl Malden), in a typical Western manner. From there, Brando's directorial debut turns into a revenge fantasy that stretches from northern Mexico to Monterey. Despite being a troubled production, Love and Revenge features stunning production elements, brilliantly casting Malden against type as the villain, and, above all, offers an engaging storyline with a certain moral ambiguity, visual beauty, and credible motivations for the characters' actions.
As for the rest of the story, Dad eventually double-crosses Rio and leaves him in a Mexican prison where the seeds of a lifelong grudge are planted. Five years pass until Rio escapes from prison, hell-bent on getting his revenge. He joins a gang of criminals led by Bon Amory (Ben Johnson) and the group heads to the California coast in pursuit of their criminal activities. In Monterrey, they finally find Dad, who now lives with his Mexican wife Maria (Katy Jurado) and his teenage stepdaughter Louisa (Pina Pellicer), and serves as the sheriff of the region. Rio pretends to be friendly, and Dad lies about his past. Bob plans a bank heist, and Louisa falls under the spell of the glamorous outlaws. Naturally, as the other men meet various evils and meet their demise, Rio achieves the well-deserved happy ending.
