The North Water, 19th century, during whale hunting in the waters of the Arctic, tells the story of Patrick Sumner, a former army surgeon who serves as a doctor on a ship. Sumner chooses to numb his body and soul with opium, as he is haunted by the crimes committed in colonial lands and their murky past. Drax, known for his tendency towards violence and cruelty, is the leader of the crew on the Volunteer ship, which is filled with a group of men with questionable innocence. As the true nature of the expedition is revealed, a great conflict erupts between the two characters. As the ship sails the open seas to slaughter whales, all hope for humanity is drowned; a world of masculinity woven with money, profit, ownership, exploitation, power, and violence is laid bare.
